Why H2S safety training matters

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a highly toxic and flammable gas that may occur in oil and gas operations and other industrial environments. It can collect in low areas and confined spaces, and odor is not a reliable warning because exposure can quickly reduce the ability to smell it.

PEC H2S Clear teaches workers how to identify conditions that may involve H2S, understand exposure risks and symptoms, use monitoring and respiratory protection correctly, and respond safely during an alarm or emergency.

Who should take PEC H2S Clear?

This course is designed for employees, contractors, supervisors, and others who may work in locations where hydrogen sulfide could be present. Many employers and worksites require H2S training annually. Confirm your specific assignment and renewal requirements with your employer.

What you will learn

Recognize the hazard

  • Common sources and sour environments
  • Physical and chemical properties of H2S
  • Toxicity, flammability, corrosion, and equipment failure
  • Exposure routes, parts per million, exposure limits, and IDLH conditions
  • Acute and chronic health effects
  • Sulfur dioxide as a secondary hazard

Control exposure

  • Hierarchy of controls and engineering safeguards
  • Warning signs, alarms, work permits, and job safety analyses
  • Confined spaces, wind direction, and the buddy system
  • Stop Work Authority and shared responsibility

Detect and monitor

  • Fixed, portable, and personal gas monitors
  • Correct placement in the breathing zone
  • Bump testing and calibration
  • Responding to detector alarms

Protect and respond

  • Respiratory protection requirements
  • Medical evaluation and fit testing
  • SAR, SCBA, and escape pack limitations
  • Emergency action plans and evacuation
  • Rescue, first aid, and post-exposure medical evaluation

Important emergency principle

Never attempt an H2S rescue unless you are properly trained, equipped, and authorized. An unprotected rescue attempt can create another victim. Follow the site emergency plan, move to the designated safe area, and allow trained responders to act.

Standards and industry expectations

PEC H2S Clear aligns with ANSI/ASSP Z390.1-2024 and addresses major requirements and guidance associated with OSHA respiratory protection and construction standards, API Recommended Practices 49 and 55, BSEE 30 CFR 250.490, the Railroad Commission of Texas, and ACGIH exposure guidance.

  • Attend the full scheduled session; class times are listed in Central Time.
  • Complete required PEC Learn/Veriforce account setup and pre-class steps in advance.
  • Remain visible, attentive, and engaged throughout the class.
  • Complete the 25-question competency exam.
